Over 30 pound lunkers of lake trout are regularly caught, with the record weighing in at over fifty pounds. The green river below the dam has blue ribbon trout fishing with giant brown trout and rainbow trout. In fact, there are over 15,000 trout per mile. This magnificent river cuts through a canyon of flaming red rock (from which the gorge gets it name) and its rugged beauty will be locked in your memory forever. The quarry is very child friendly and not to be missed. Echo Park is also located inside the monument. This unique spot is where the Green and Tampa rivers converge. Speaking of Echo park, petroglyph sites and other archeological curiosities are found in abundance all throughout the area. The Freemont people lived in the region about 1000 years ago and left evidence of their culture in the form of petroglyphs and pictographs. It is not uncommon for local ranchers and farmers to discover arrow heads, grinding stones, and other ancient artifacts along the outskirts of their land. Diamond mountain itself also has a storied past and was frequented by Butch Cassidy, the Sundance Kid, and the Wild Bunch. The legacy and romance of the West is still very much alive in this rugged setting and it's tough to find a better place to sit back and soak it all in than Diamond Gulch Cabin. With the old west on the horizon, the sun sinking below it's cusp, and the vast wilderness at your back, it's hard not to get a little nostalgic.
