The Property referred to as Round Hill Residence is a three-bedroom house on a five-acre wooded hillside in southern Connecticut, with panoramic views of rolling hills and the Long Island Sound. In designing the house, the notion of transparency led us to the idea of a temple form: modern, yet reminiscent of Greek Revival architecture. The glass pediment reinforces this idea, while the portico continues the theme of colonnades found inside the house. The interiors are simple and direct. Wood shutters help modulate light and view. The floor is maple, the bookshelves oak, and the shutters pine. The exterior is painted wood. The key organizing element of the house is a central brick octagon from which a three-story tower emerges as a freestanding form. A balcony and continuous line of light entering through the skylights separate the octagon from the tower. The living room is ringed by a bay window expanding along the octagon, and the other living spaces grow laterally from it in a clear hierarchical order. The library addition completes an entry courtyard. Constructed of glass and wood, it faces the rolling hills in the distance, embracing the notion of transparency that follows throughout the house.
